Mannitol

Gulshan Polyols Ltd. intends to broaden its product portfolio into value added starch based products like Mannitol & Dextrose Monohydrate. The expansion will be executed with a capacity of 4000 MTPA and 12000 MTPA respectively at GPL’s existing Polyols facility in Jhagadia Industrial Estate, Gujarat.

There has been a remarkable growth in the Polyols industry worldwide due to their applications in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector. In fact, India is becoming a manufacturing hub for Global pharma giants, while Mannitol and DMH find applications mostly in this sector. The major production of these products is under taken in France, Europe, South Africa and China.

GPL has identified this product segment attractive not only for its growth pattern, but also for the huge gap existing in supply of the same. At present, there is no manufacturing facility available in Asia (except China) for Mannitol. India imports Mannitol to the extent of 5000 MTPA, which is constantly growing at the rate of 10-15% pa. Similarly, Dextrose Monohydrate (DMH) is entirely imported and exhibits significant growth in demand each year.

Production of large quantities of Sorbitol set a base raw material and platform to manufacture value added starch based products. To benefit from its inherent strengths, GPL, a market leader in producing Sorbitol, has been developing the expertise required toproducemore value added starch based productsand has succeeded in achieving the know-how for manufacturing Mannitol and Dextrose Monohydrate.

Further, Polyols share a common profile of users, thus GPL is confident to have an edge in marketing its new productsto its existing customer base and sales & marketing network across the country.

ABOUT MANNITOL

Mannitol is a specialty polyol, a sugar alcohol, i.e. it is derived from a sugar by reduction. Mannitol in pyrogen free pure form, finds applications in food industry and pharma industry as a diuretic in the manufacture of Intravenous (IV Fluids) and tablets. Pharma Industry consumes more than 55% of Mannitol produced worldwide.  Mannitol is non hygroscopic (does not pick up moisture) therefore, it is often used as a dusting powder for chewing gum to prevent the gum from sticking to the manufacturing equipment and wrappers. Due to its high melting point (165-169o C), Mannitol is also used in chocolate-flavored coating agents for ice cream and confectionary.

ABOUT DEXTROSE MONOHYDRATE (DMH)

Dextrose Monohydrate (DMH) is sweet in taste and being a simple sugar, it is readily absorbed by the body and provides instant energy to overcome physical fatigue. It is extensively used in many food products both in liquid and in dry forms, most popular example being GLUCON-D. DMH is widely used in Pharmaceutical industry as a rehydrating agent and in Oral Syrups. DMH is useful to the confectionary industry by controlling sweetness, softness and crystallization of confectionery and other foods.
